Interactions between Herbs, Vitamins & Medications

BY: Dr. M. Iles, Phd, CCMH

A common problem in today’s health environment, is confusion and lack of education and authentic information regarding proper integration of prescription medications, herbs, vitamin supplements and foods.  Through lack of knowledge and education, well meaning family, friends, and store clerks often suggest poorly combined or at times dangerously combined vitamins and herbs. Since herbs and vitamins are sold over-the-counter we assume they are harmless but, this is not the case.  Both herbs and vitamins, can interfere with medications, certain foods and even with each other.  Some of the most popular herbs such as echinacea, chamomile, milk thistle or valerian are in the ragweed family, if you are one of the many people that suffer with ragweed allergies these herbs would be a poor choice. Many herbs and foods interfere with blood thinners, antibiotics, heart medications and even pain killers, this type of interference is the very reason you should never purchase an herb or vitamin because it advertises to help with an aliment.  In the long run this type of purchasing can be harmful to your health either by interfering with medication or simply because the herb is wrong for you.

The key to good health is finding the combination that is right for you and for your specific health needs.  Combining supplements, medications and herbs should not be a hit-and-miss approach, it should be based on knowledge, experience and qualifications.
