The research of dietary supplements is like judging an entire barrel of apples by examining one.  This type of research is not complete as it fails to understand the way individual nutrients interact within the entire system of the human body.

If we isolate antioxidants we will soon discover that all antioxidants are not created equal.   Antioxidants are known to fight free radicals but each antioxidant may offer only  a very small range of activity.  An example of this is beta-carotene.  Beta-carotene is effective against free radicals known as singlet oxygen however, it is powerless against dozens of other types of free radicals.  As a result, beta-carotene alone has a very limited range of benefit.  Beta-Carotene needs to be combined properly with other nutrients to be effective.  In fact beta-carotene alone or worse, synthetic becomes toxic to the liver and causes damage.
